Following the first successful Regional Conference in Uppsala, Sweden, the British Association for Slavonic and East European Studies (BASEES) organised its second Regional Conference in cooperation with the Leibniz ScienceCampus “Eastern Europe – Global Area” (EEGA) Annual Conference online in April 2021.
Under the theme “Globalising Eastern Europe – New Perspectives on Transregional Entanglements”, we stimulated and discussed research on these border-crossing encounters in a comparative perspective. Aiming to stimulate a debate about interpretations across historical periods and geographical spaces, the conference brought together perspectives and case studies from a variety of disciplines. In thematic panels international junior and senior scholars presented their research on Eastern Europe, an area spanning from Poland in the West to Russia in the East, to the Balkans and the Caucasus in the South, in its global and transregional entanglements.
The opening event of this year’s EEGA BASEES Regional Conference has been an online panel discussion on 20 April, 6:30 pm. Matthias Neumann (University of East Anglia), Marci Shore (University of Yale), Mikhail Anipkin (sociologist) and Félix Krawatzek (ZOiS) discussed „The end of communism as a generational phenomenon?“. The Event is part of the ZOiS Forum | #30PostSovietYears. For more information, please click here. You can watch the full video on Youtube.
The conference kicked off on 21 April with an online round table discussion. Moderator was the indepent journalist Gemma Pörzgen. The discussion focused on the current political situation in Belarus and its transregional and global impact. In the discussion, Stefan Rohdewald (historian, Leipzig University), Alla Leukavets (political scientist, currently EEGA Postdoc Fellow), Felix Ackermann (historian, German Historical Institute Warsaw), and Iryna Herasimovich (translator and essayist) together with the audience online opened up new perspectives on transregional entanglements of the region.
